The UNTURNING STEEL Story
Shortly after the loss of Bill's brother, MAJ Sean P. Leahy, USMC, we launched into development. We earned the "Best Cultural Innovation Award" from the University of Tennessee—Knoxville's Reliability and Maintainability Center and The Reliability of Everything because of our efforts. In 2024, we launched our second cohort in Knoxville, TN, and have begun preparations for full-scale operations in 2025.

We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit status ensuring our program is cost-free for service members. We are currently recruiting US Manufacturers to join UNTURNING STEEL as host companies.
We invite all like-minded organizations and individuals to join us. The only requirement is a solid commitment to supporting our military and manufacturing communities. Join us!
The UNTURNING STEEL Story

Ours is a US MADE story, rooted in two brothers—MAJ Sean Leahy, USMC and the younger CPT Bill Leahy, USA. Both served and moved into manufacturing, where they envisioned uniting on a mission to serve the communities central to their lives setting the conditions for veteran success and operational excellence in US Manufacturing. They called it "The Manufacturing Leaders Project." But tragedy struck, and the promise faded.

It was over a decade after Sean (Left) and his best friend LTC Gabe Flores (Right) returned from a deployment to Afganistan as Platoon Commanders when Sean committed suicide. Just months into his transition to civilian life he joined the 125,000+ veterans lost in this way since 2001. For everyone that knew him it was unfathomable. For Bill it meant the dream of building something with his brother was at an end.

With greater understanding UTS development continued. In the fall of 2024, following a second pilot program in Knoxville, TN, UTS was granted 501(c)(3) non-profit status. Today, we are building relationships, securing partners, fundraising, and applying the lessons learned from our pilot programs to ensure the successful launch of full-scale operations in 2025. We are doing important work and need help. We hope you join us on this incredible journey.
